What is starvation?
Starvation is a severe deficiency in caloric energy, nutrient, and vitamin intake.
It is the most extreme form of malnutrition. In humans, prolonged starvation can cause permanent organ damage and eventually, death.

Why is it called the problem of 21th century?
According to the World Health Organisation, hunger is the single gravest threat to the world's public health.
The WHO also states that malnutrition is by far the biggest contributor to child mortality, present in half of all cases. Under nutrition is a contributory factor in the death of 3.1 million children under five every year.
Why have I chosen to present the issue of starvation?
I decided to choose the topic of famine because in my opinion, it is the biggest problem of 21th century in all over the world. The facts are shocking and everyone must pay attention to it. It happens not only in Africa, India, Kenya but you also can find such examples in Lithuania as well. To my mind, the number of starving people is increasing because of unemployment, various disasters and huge population.
Where is the biggest amount of starving dwellers?
Where is no doubt that one of the poorest countries in the world is South Africa.
Statistics show that more than half of South Africa`s children live in poverty.
A total of 330.000 children – and five million adults – are currently infected with HIV, and 40 per cent die from the pandemic annually.
What changes must be done in order to improve the situation in South Africa?
The facts speak for themselves: if we don`t invest in our children now, we might as well give up on our future.
It is found that million children live homes that rely on often dirty stream for drinking water, million have no flushing lavatories and million live in shacks, with no proper bedding, cooking, or washing facilities.
The emergence of a broad partnership to build a vibrant culture of giving would be a significant advance in tackling the challenges of poverty and inequality. Such a partnership would help to connect formal and informal patterns of mutual aid and giving.
